ROUTE 29 WIDENING Begings to Complete Spring 2026

(February 2023)

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has started work on widening ROUTE 29 (Lee Highway) from Union Mills to Buckley Gate Drive (approximately 1.5 miles) with major impact on the intersections at Union Mill and Stringfellow/Clifton Roads.

The project will increase the two lanes to three lanes in each direction, correct vertical alignment to improve sight distance especially at the Stringfellow/Clifton Roads intersections (in front of and west of the 7-Eleven store), add/improve bicycle and pedestrian facilities on both sides of Route 29 and provide connectivity to pedestrian/bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange. It will also correct the chronic drainage problems in the low area just east of Clifton Road.

This project estimated at $97 million is being financed with "Smart Scale" funding and the "I-66 concession" fee.

Notice: Fairfax County Glass Recycling

Purple Can Club (Glass Recycling) Resumed

After suspending the program early March due to the COVID-19 pandemic collection of glass dropped off at purple, glass-only containers resumes Monday, May 11, 2020. Containers are being reset at locations throughout Fairfax County. See Northern Virginia Glass Recover Map.

Residents can also bring glass to containers at the I-66 transfer station and I-95 landfill complex, or glass can be placed in the trash.

Update!

Glass Containers No Longer Accepted in Curbside Recycling Program

Fairfax County announced that it will no longer accept glass bottles and jars in the curbside recycling bins, effective Oct. 1, 2019. This change applies to all county collection customers and private haulers. However it seems that the private contractors are still collectting glass containers as the new rules aren't being inforced; for how long it is not clear.

You have two options under the new guidelines for glass disposal:

  1. (preferred) Deliver used glass containers to purple, glass-only recycling containers; there are now 21 purple containers available county wide, and more sites are being evaluated to make dropping off glass more convenient.
  2. Place used glass in the curbside trash bin not in the rycle bin.

The two closes glass only collection purple containers to Cavalier Woods are:

  • I-66 Transfer Station (Across from the Costco Plaza)
    4618 West Ox Rd., Fairfax
  • Fairfax County Government Center
    12000 Government Center Pkwy, Fairfax

For more information about this change and the location of additional purple glass-only recycling containers go to the Fairfax County county web_site.

Visit the Gardens of Northern Virginia!

Library Gazebo
The Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia have developed and maintains seven demonstration gardens in the NOVA area. In each of these gardens, you can see firsthand the types of plants that grow well in our area, recommended planting practices, and overall garden care.

Visitors can also simply enjoy each garden’s unique beauty. The gardens contain a large variety of plants. Old favorites grow alongside new experimental varieties. Volunteers maintain the gardens throughout the year using the practices and techniques learned in the VCE Master Gardening Training Course and monthly continuing education programs.

If you see a “work party” in progress, stop by and talk to these dedicated volunteers. They’ll be happy to show you the gardens and answer your questions.

Please use the link menu to visit each individual demonstration garden’s webpage.
